The word for 2009

Happy New Year!!  Seems like Y2K was just yesterday, but here we are in 2009!  From the 911 attacks, to the war on terror, to the financial markets meltdown of 2008 it's been a fast and furious 9 years.

Hope everyone is ready for the next 9? But before trying to imagine what the next 9 years have in store, let's talk just about this year for a moment. The word Challenges, certainly has to be at the core of any discission about 2009 - and beyond.

challenge  [chal-inj]  noun, verb, -lenged, -leng⋅ing, adjective-noun

1. a call or summons to engage in any contest, as of skill, strength, etc.

2. something that by its nature or character serves as a call to battle, contest, special effort, etc.: Space exploration offers a challenge to humankind.

3. a call to fight, as a battle, a duel, etc.

In the Army AT&L program acquisition management business domain, we have our own seemingly endless list of challenges for 2009.  I would argue that supporting our war fighters actively engaged in the war on terror while we experience ever increasing resource constraints is our No. 1 Challenge.

But there's another word that I believe we should embrace and make our word for 2009. That word - OPPORTUNITY!

opportunity  [op-er-too-ni-tee, -tyoo-] noun, plural -ties.

1. an appropriate or favorable time or occasion: Their meeting afforded an opportunity to exchange views.

2. a situation or condition favorable for attainment of a goal.

3. a good position, chance, or prospect, as for advancement or success

I'm pulling for all those in positions of management striving to focus on program managing the mission, for all those in the workforce fighting the good fight - striving to do the right thing in support of the mission and our war fighters, and finally for all the Commanders striving to exert leadership for the workforce and the mission.

We at NMT continue to be committed to providing the Army AT&L workforce with ever increasing program management business capabilities with PMADS. The past few years have been very rewarding for us as we've strived to help Army offices gain increased operational capabilities in support of their mission. We've learned a lot working with the workforce over these past few years. We continue to plow this knowledge into PMADS development. 2009 will see a version 3.0 release that will leverage the latest in state-of the-art technologies/methodologies coupled with increased program management functionalities and features.
